Diminuendo visualizes the detrimental effects plastic waste has on marine life and the environment from an emotional point of view. Through visual metaphors, the viewer is guided through sceneries that get more and more covered by plastic. To emphasize the contrast between the natural world and the plastic world, the animation is done entirely with ink on paper, except for the plastic, which stands apart from the oceanic life in bright digital yellow. The two parts are united through the pulsing paper texture that shines through the semi-opaque yellow as a constant reminder of the underlying life it covers. But there is room for change. In the end, it is never too late for a helping hand.

Henrike Lendowski is an award winning animator and illustrator working between the realms of analog and digital art. She has an M.F.A. in Animation and Digital Arts from Pratt Institute,Brooklyn, NY. Her work addresses a variety of cultural, social and political issues, such as environmental pollution and protection of endangered species. Conveying her love for illustration, printmaking and music, her work shows a wide range of techniques and materials, closely intertwined with music to create one seamless entity. Henrike currently resides in Berlin, where she uses her skills to create thought provoking visual experiences.

Somewhere in France, summer 2020, work like in old times. Bonneval-sur-Arc: In the up to 60 degree steep meadows, the work of haymaking is not much different from 100 years ago. If a thunderstorm threatens, the work has to go even faster! The maintenance and new management of mountain meadows represents an invaluable contribution to the preservation of cultural assets and biodiversity. Lean mountain meadows are among the most species-rich, but now unfortunately also among the most endangered habitats. The extensive cultivation of lean meadows has all but died out in many parts of Europe. But you have to have been there and smelled the mountain meadow hay to know what a treasure has been recovered here!

Can you imagine our world without coffee? It’s a very real possibility. It’s Bean Too Hot tells the story of the coffee heroes – small farmers in Costa Rica and Tanzania who are fighting climate change every day to save their livelihoods and your daily cup of coffee. Climate change is affecting coffee production worldwide. Wild species of coffee as well as the cultivated Arabica coffee are showing sensitivity to changes in temperature, rainfall, pests and disease. Experts predict that the land suitable for Arabica coffee could decrease to 50% by 2050. This is a story told by those who are feeling climate change the most. It is estimated that there are 25 million coffee farmers around the world, all of which depend on coffee to maintain their livelihoods. The heroes responsible for our favourite drink that we often forget about are the most important part of the chain, but also the one that is struggling the most. Adapting to changing climate requires severe changes in farming and funds many of the farmers don‘t have. It‘s Bean Too Hot takes you on a journey around the world, from Costa Rica and Tanzania all the way to your couch as you drink your morning coffee, unaware of the threats that it‘s facing. It dives into fully carbon-neutral farms, explores climate-smart agricultural practices being used to adapt to climate change and protect biodiversity, and finds out what drives smallholder families to continue producing coffee.

Hedvika Michnova is a filmmaker and photographer from the Czech Republic, living in Bristol UK. As a graduate of Marine and Natural History Film, she has recently completed a short-film “It’s Bean Too Hot” about the effects of climate change on coffee production. She is passionate about telling stories about the natural world, communicating important issues to the audience and hoping to create an impact on the viewer with her films.

Christos Avraam makes paintings, collages and installations that explore social and political phenomena, as well as the structure and behaviors that develop in the urban environment. In his work a dense and sometimes suppressing environment constitutes the space were humans act and are represented in an illusionist, three-dimensional manner. In his later work Avraam seeks to undermine the distinction among what is considered to be the painting’s depictive content and the painting’s surface or surrounding space. Christos Avraam was born in 1978 in Nicosia and he graduated from Athens National School of Fine Arts. He is an active member of the artist’s local society and he was the vise-president of the Cyprus Chamber of Fine Arts (2012-2015 ). His work has been presented in group exhibitions in Cyprus, Greece, Spain, United Kingdom and Russia. Selected works of the artist are exhibited in Plyos Museum (Russia), Saatchi Gallery(UK) and in private collections in Cyprus and abroad.

The film tells the poignant story that lies behind the scene of Euripides’ The Trojan Women performed at Syracuse Greek Theater, Sicily, in summer 2019. The famous Greek tragedy tells the aftermath of the defeat of Troy, when women were assigned as slaves to the winners and the city was set on fire. To depict that ravaged scenario, architect Stefano Boeri, who designed the stage set, found inspiration in the waste land left behind by Vaia Storm, extreme atmospheric event linked to climate change. From 2018 he works for the milanese video production company The Blink Fish, focusing on the relationship between architecture and audiovisuals. He has created videos and short films in Italy and abroad on the work of architects and designers such as Luigi Caccia Dominioni, Peter Aldington, Alan Kitching, Patrick Bouchain, Duilio Forte, Bruno Vaerini, Corrado Levi and Stefano Boeri.

Joan Zhonga is an animation director specialising in stop motion animation with puppets and plasticine. He’s a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Tirana and has more than 35 years of experience in animation. During his career he’s directed 13 animation films that have been screened and awarded in many international film festivals such as Annecy, Hiroshima, Giffonni and Fantoche. In 2006 he collaborated with the master of children’s books, Eugenios Trivizas, in the film “The two waves” (2006), produced by ERT. His latest film, “Ethnophobia” (2016), has been so far screened in 130 festivals, including the Manchester Kinofilm Festival (18-26 Nov.), and won 23 awards.

The Danube Delta is one of Europe’s last refuges for pelicans. Hunted and threatened with extermination, these voracious birds were seen under the communist regime as natural enemies of industrial fishing. Since then, their population has recovered, mainly through the creation of protected areas. But this return is not to the liking of all the inhabitants of the delta: the last fishermen fear for their means of subsistence. For them, the pelican remains a formidable competitor. Instead, environmentalists and biologists rejoice in this restocking and biodiversity of the Danube Delta.

Part of the teaching staff of the Faculty of Theatre and Television at the Cluj University ( UBB) since the beginning in 2005. In 2012 he achieved his doctoral thesis with the title Text and image in the mass-media.

Collaborations with some of major broadcasters in Europe and his filmography includes author documentary productions (screenplay, directing, photography), multi-awarded at festivals in the country and Europe.

Travelling theatre troupes with their pagan roots and Christian Orthodox tradition are two seemingly opposite worlds, both mysterious and both enchanting to the author.

This experimental – non narrative – animated short film is inspired by Kostis Kolotas’ text “An Unfinished Novel” (Cyprus, 2000). In the novel, set in rural Cyprus of the past, Christian Orthodox tradition and the mysterious world of travelling theatre troupes, considered sinful by organized religion, fascinate the young protagonist equally. The film explores hidden and not-so-hidden paths that connect Christian tradition, pagan ritual and theatre. Like the Cypriot author Kostis Kolotas, the filmmaker is enchanted by life close to nature and the rich history of his homeland. Using abstract forms, inspiration from printmaking and folk art the film expresses the emotional and visual impact of a beautiful but disappearing world.

The music explores notions and expressions in orbit with the film’s theme and title. Spring is the time when blossoming eruptions emerge in nature but also in the hearts of people. The synergy of all the elements produces an escalating rebellious tension of textures and sensations leading to catharsis.

Yiorgos Tsangaris is a graphic artist experimental animation filmmaker and the founder and artistic director of Animafest Cyprus, the official International Animation Film Festival of Cyprus and one of the oldest film festivals in this country (founded 2002). He is the director of the Hambis Municipal Printmaking Museum in Nicosia. As a graphic artist and film curator in the last twenty years he has had important collaborations in the field of film festivals, theatre and major cultural organisations in Cyprus and internationally. He has curated guest programmes and has served as a jury member for numerous animation festivals around the world. “Rites of Spring”, his first experimental animation film, premiered in Ottawa International Animation Festival in September 2021.
